Welcome to my new website! I still need to add photos to all the articles under the Travel section; however, the CDT category does have photos, so check that out to get a feel of what the other sections will look like once they have photos too. I need to update many hyperlinks too. After you're done looking around, please take my 5 question survey! It takes less than a minute and you'll help influence how my website evolves! Thank you!

Francis Tapon looking up
Y
ou've arrived at the best place to learn more about Francis Tapon than you would ever want to. I am currently traveling in Eastern Europe and writing my second book, The Hidden Europe: What Eastern Europeans Can Teach Us.

Latest News in January 2009: I'm honored to have been nominated a one of the seven finalists to the California Outdoors Hall of Famenominated a one of the seven finalists to the California Outdoors Hall of Fame, which "features nominees who are world-renowned for their skills and who have helped inspire thousands of others to take part in the great outdoors." Some think that they nominated me because I've evangelized about the glories of backpacking 10,000 miles, but I know the real reason: they're impressed that I backpacked for 45 days without a shower.

Thank you Andy Warhol: My five minutes of fame have come from being the first to yo-yo the Continental Divide Trail and writing Hike Your Own Hike: 7 Life Lessons from Backpacking Across America. I also thru-hiked the Pacific Crest Trail and Appalachian Trail southbound (fewer than five people have done the Triple Crown (AT, CDT, PCT) all southbound. The good news of only having five minutes of fame is that it means I'm due for another 10 minutes down the road.

Hike Your Own Hike: 7 Life Lessons from Backpacking Across America by Francis Tapon. This is the dust jacket cover of the hardcover book. One of the cool, new features in this site is that you can enlarge many of the photos by just putting your mouse pointer over them. Try it with the photo of my book cover on the left. It will only work if you see a magnifying glass when you mouse over the photo (so it doesn't work with the photo of me on the right because you really don't want a closeup of my face).

Want to stay in touch? Subscribe to my newsletter by entering your email in the box on the right and clicking the "Subscribe" button. As bonus, if you subscribe, you'll get special access to the first chapter of my upcoming book, The Hidden Europe. As a subscriber, you'll get an occasional email from me, usually about some nutty adventure I am doing. The newsletter is free and I won't share your info with anyone, not even my mom. I hate spam too, so you can easily unsubscribe anytime.

Francis Tapon and Benny Hill in costume party in Parnu, Estonia.Happy New Year!

I went to a costume party for New Year's Eve in ParnuParnu, Estonia. Everyone was supposed to be either a movie star or an animated character. I dressed up as a thru-hiker, using my sexy Jacks 'R Better convertible sleeping bag and its stylish green hood. The sleeping bag does double duty as a serape, but what its designers don't know is that it has a third use: a make-shift costume for a party. When asked what I was, I replied, "A green M&M."
